Pet hotel vs kennel vs boarding house
The labels describe fit-out and marketing more than a different legal service. All three are commercial boarding and need the same AVS licence. Here is what each term usually signals.
Pet / dog hotel
Hospitality framing: private suites, cageless rooms, webcams, premium enrichment. The most owner-facing, comfort-led vocabulary.
Kennel
The traditional term — often individual enclosures with shared exercise time. Not automatically worse; depends entirely on the operator and welfare standards.
Boarding house
A more home-style or facility term used interchangeably with boarding. Look past the label at the actual setup, group sizes and supervision.
Cageless, honestly
“Cageless” and “cage-free” are among the most-marketed phrases in Singapore boarding — SethLui highlights cageless small-dog boarding from around S$25/day, and operators like Olo and Aylabella lead with cage-free framing. It genuinely suits many dogs. But it is a fit question, not a quality badge.
The right question is not “is it cageless?” but “is this setup right for my dog?” We help you ask it.
The trade-offs
- Good for: sociable, confident, house-trained dogs who relax in a free-roaming, home-style room with company.
- Harder for: anxious, reactive, recovering or senior dogs who may prefer their own defined, quiet space.
- Always ask: how are groups sized and matched, and where does a dog go when it needs to be separated or rest?
The luxury tier
Premium hotels layer on private suites, 24/7 supervision, webcam access, one-to-one walks and grooming add-ons. The features buyers most often compare are cageless vs caged, round-the-clock supervision, size limits and enrichment. Under the polish, the same AVS welfare standards still apply — ventilation, a quarantine area and exercise space are licence conditions, not extras.

By size: small, large and in between
Size is the single biggest factor in which hotels can take your dog. Many cageless small-dog hotels use a 15kg cutoff — a common industry line, not a rule.
Small dogs (≤15kg)
The widest choice, including most cageless small-dog hotels. Look for size-matched play groups so your dog is not mixed with much larger ones.
Large dogs
Fewer cageless options; better served by facilities with larger suites and dedicated exercise areas. We match to hotels that genuinely accommodate bigger dogs.
Special needs
Senior, anxious or medicated dogs may need a quieter suite, calmer groups or a facility comfortable administering medication. Tell us and we factor it in.
We compare hotels — we do not run one
dogboarding.sg operates no pet hotel and holds no licence. When we describe suites, cageless rooms or amenities, we mean what the boarders we match you with typically offer — never our own premises. We only route enquiries to operators we can check against the official AVS licensed register. See how we vet boarders, or our overview of dog boarding in Singapore.
